Every first week of August, the Philippines celebrate the “Linggo ng Wika” or the importance of our national language which is Filipino. Each year, our schools would organize programs and participate in parades, with the students wearing our traditional Maria Clara clothing along with the boys wearing Barong and black pants waving small flags, there’s also the bugle bands complete with the majorettes and Ati-atihan dancers. Government agencies would declare a national holiday and people go to a flag store to buy small flags to wave at the parades. In schools we have writing composition and art contest depicting on canvas how our students visualize the current “Linggo ng Wika” theme. Back in high school, we used to have flag ceremonies before we start the celebration, and I was one of those who were asked to raise the Philippine flag, at the time I was a COCC (Cadet Officer Candidate Corps). I remember how nice it was to feel the thick cloth, the embroidered Sun and three stars. This reminded me of the Valley Forge Flags on my uncle’s photos, he used to serve the US army back in 1987 and he even brought home one to adorn our living room, for a little girl, it seems as if a huge flag! It was with nice smooth texture and we couldn’t help but feel the embroidered stars, he told us that it represents the US 50 states, he even showed us the map where he had his training. There were a lot of really nice stories when he was in the army and I guess I will have to continue next time.

I have always been fascinated by the mixture of colors, the uniqueness it gives and the character it conveys once it’s laid down on paper, or walls.

I’m no expert when it comes to deciphering what a particular art meant. Some people find meaning to it, but I just see something different, something that cathes my eye and my imagination.

Pauline Sho‘s arts are really amazing. She’s a 19 year old girl who lives in Malaysia and is known to create beautiful art using Photoshop, she assumes the pseudo name LicoMomo on her arts.

Her arts is characterized by how she uses the mixture of colors, forms, texts and photos and each composition would look almost abstract, that would depict a scene or feeling, in a way it’s trying to convey a message of different emotions, almost enchanting! Her inspiration for her art would come from her music, books, and even her dreams.

Here are sample of her arts:

People

Various

She’s currently on hiatus since her desktop gave, but you can still view her artworks in Devianart.

I was watching Planet 51 and it very much reminded me of the 1950′s era, because the cartoon film was set to live in a similar society. I can’t help but laugh at the Lollipop song by the Chordettes. When I was a little girl, my Aunts would play it on a turn table and sing the lyrics on a bright morning. How I miss the fresh air and bright ray of sunshine go through our freshly cleaned wide windows!

Anyway, the fifties left us a significant timelines, and it was tagged “The Golden Era” because of the many big things that happened back then:

-The credit card system was introduced in the United States of America.
-Mass production of computers began.
-It was the year that the first organ transplant took place.
-Pucci Fashion House was opened.

Along with Elvis Presley who also shared a good amount of fame in the 1950′s. This was also the time when Elvis Presley appeared in his first movie, Love Me Tender; remember the lei and the ukulele?

This was also the start of the mark of Marilyn Monroe in the movies, where she was introduced in these films; The Asphalt Jungle & All About Eve.

This was also the mark of the polka dot fashion! The 1950′s styles were hourglass shape, fitted body with small waistline and shoulder in full or thin skirts -paired in higher heels. Christina Aguilera wore (in her Back to Basics album) a pair of black higher heel shoes.

In those times, American Fashion was the fad for the Filipinos. There were too many GI movies, and this was when Gloria Romero, Nida Blanca and Nestor de Villa became a household name.

[Edited]Wikipedia says that U.S. colonial rule of the Philippines started in 1905. A colony is a country that has been inhabited and ruled by a stronger country, and this is where a representative is sent to make sure that changes are implemented. Like for example the colonization of Africa, they were forced to wear boots and layered clothing, why? This is because; the governing official is tasked to make sure that he makes this colonized country to be a near-copy or reflection of that Kingdom. Thus the change in lifestyle and education system. Imagine, Africa is a baren country, and they were forced to wear thick clothing. Go figure!

Colonialization is like changing of the mind, you are made to forget your own culture and adapt to theirs. You may say, wow! It’s already 21st century? Yes that is true, however, colonization is not constricted to invading a country. Nowadays we have MTV, Movies, Music and Fashion. And this is how the American Fashion dominated the Filipino taste in clothing, because at the time, we we’re being brainwashed into adapting to their culture. [/Edited]

This entry was inspired by my entry What Me Thinks…

The people that we chose to be around us, more often than not, defines who we are. Our character is reflected by who we associate with everyday, because we tend to adapt to their ways. Their thought patterns and how they speak. We tend to take friends who have similarities with us, maybe they are fun to talk to, they eat a lot like you, a techie junkie like you. But whatever the case maybe, the bottom line is, you might also adapt not only their liking for something that you like too, but their bad habits as well. In some cases, personality types should also be one of our priority in choosing a friend, because these are the people we trust to keep our secrets, if not our lives too. I learned to be careful in choosing who I associate with, and now, experience tells me that, in order for me to have a successful friendship, these are what I should be looking for…

Transparency
A friend should always be transparent. This is what I’ve learned from my friendship with Lalaine. She is always truthful about her conversations with me, whether criticism or in giving me advices. However, most people do not really share your goal in life, and you can never expect people to be transparent, so be very careful in sharing your life’s most kept secret! And this also I learned, people are only mad at you because

Sincerity
If a person needs something, they should say it right there and then, no need to beat around the bush. And if should they feel something bad, something that they think is done to them unfairly, they should speak up directly to the person and not go about everybody who doesn’t even understand the situation.

A true friendship based on honesty and respect is bound to stay strong and long.
